Making a FreeBSD DVD in Windows System

posted in: BSD Unix, Research

There are only CD ISO image in the FreeBSD official website. installation FreeBSD by 2 or 3 CD is inconvenient. we need replace CD one by one. so a DVD installation disc will save a lot of times and work.

The following Tools will be used in the work of creating DVD ISO image: WinRAR, CD ISO 1 to 3 of Freebsd(I use Freebsd6.3), UltraISO (winISO also can work in this project, but I like UltraISO) and emeditor(or any editor who support unix text format). Moreover if you want burn DVD-ROM, your need software of burning and DVD-RW driver and DVD-R or DVD-RW disc.

Before start, you need check md5 of each CD ISO image. you need make sure each image files have no problem in the downloading.

First of all, Export ISO image files of disc 2 and 3 to individual folder, we call folder of disc 2 is “disc2″ and other is “disc3″. you don’t need to export disc 1 ISO image. Just leave it.

After exporting, Search a file that name is “INDEX” in the folder “disc2″ or “disc3″. in fact, wherever three disc ISO images, there are three files of “INDEX” with same content. Just copy any one of them to the same folder with disc 1 ISO image file.

Open “INDEX” at emeditor, replace all “|2″ and “|3″ to “|1″. File “INDEX” just record which disc hold each package. if we making a DVD ISO image, all packages will be hold in disc one. that is why “INDEX” need be changed.

Then, we could add all packages of “disc2″ and “disc3″ to first ISO image. using UltraISO open ISO image of disc 1. using “add” command add the all folders of “package” folder under the “disc2″. Do same thing with “disc3″ folder.

Following, update file “INDEX” of disc one file by the file that you have changed.

Last but not least, save the ISO image file.

Now, you can burn FreeBSD in any DVD-R or DVD-RW by this ISO image.

Tx Lee for the manip, but what about the bootonly.iso cd? can we include this as well on the DVD or does it have to remain on a separate CD?

you just edit the first CD iso image by this way, and the First CD iso image is boot images CD. so you don’t need bootonly iso CD.

Can I extract disc 1 also before adding disc 2 and 3 into it? Can’t afford to buy UltraISO.

Yes, UltralISO has file size limit without pay. you can use ISO commander, you can try it for 30 days and no file size limit. and ISO Master is probabily free for linux.

don’t extract disc 1, becouse it is bootable disc, if you do that. the bootability of disc1 will be destroyed.
